Acne Problem - The Psychological Effects of Acne

The physical disturbance that acne gives is quite evident. One may blurt out that he does not like the scars and the uneven skin resulting to acne outburst. But really, there’s more to it than what is seen by the eyes.

Teenagers and young adolescents are the ones usually affected by acne. Studies show that about 85% of acne victims are teenagers and those in their early twenties. This is such a crucial stage in one’s life.

Medical professionals, based on their encounters with patients with acne, have concluded that psychological effects tend to be more obvious as they give birth to other effects such as socially.

A person with acne almost always finds himself losing his self-esteem and confidence. Peer pressure is so intense during this period of a person’s life therefore it is understandable that every one of us would like to look presentable and attractive. But acne absolutely ruins this.

It would be easy for us to find these young adults trying to avoid eye contact as much as possible even to the point of alienating themselves from their peers. They begin to withdraw themselves from participating in school or in cases of young adults, work activities.

They pretty much want to keep things to themselves and they don’t want to be caught off-guarded. They would result to do things that either aggravate the situation or worsen their appearance. It is common for teenagers to wear long hair because that’s one way they could hide their condition. For girls, they often choose to wear make-up which might just make their acne worse.

It is also difficult to maintain, much more create a new relationship. As humans, we all have the desire to belong. But some people can be cruel by taunting, teasing this acne victim. Thus, he’d rather stay home, probably to the point of dropping out from school.

It is a big possibility that having a new relationship especially with someone from the opposite sex can be even more difficult. The idea of having a not-so-good-looking boyfriend or girlfriend can be too much for a person to handle. Rejection is a possible result.

On a larger scale, it can be very stressful to find a job that doesn’t require at least “a good personality.” A friend who works in an airline once told me that their flight attendants are not allowed to travel if they have just a single bump on their face. Imagine if you’ve got more.

Even the supposed most good-looking guy or girl would definitely not land on his/her ideal modeling job if all of a sudden his/her face has been pockmarked with acne. Goodbye work, goodbye career.

For anyone who has a family member, friend or colleague who is suffering from acne, I think the best we can do is to assure them that they are precious and to convince them to seek medical help. There are a lot of available treatments. All we need to do is to be smart in choosing the best for us.
